A villa designed around nature
This high-end villa in Spijk, the Netherlands, was designed with a strong connection to its surroundings. Greenery is an integral part of the architecture, extending onto the roof where a Sedum green roof creates a living landscape above the home.
To complement this design, renewable energy was integrated directly into the green roof rather than treated as a separate rooftop element.
Solar and greenery sharing the same roof
55 lightweight vertical solar units are positioned among the Sedum vegetation. Their vertical orientation leaves space for the plants to grow around and between the units, preserving the green character of the roof while making room for solar generation.
The bifacial units capture sunlight from both sides, while the Sedum roof contributes to water retention and biodiversity. Together, the two systems make use of the same rooftop footprint while serving different functions.
Sustainable living in practice
The combination of solar generation and a vegetated roof creates a multifunctional rooftop that contributes both environmental and energy benefits. During the summer months, the solar production helps the villa operate almost energy-neutrally.
The project demonstrates how renewable energy can be integrated into high-end residential architecture without compromising its connection to nature — making sustainability part of the design from the very beginning.
